Detailed Solution

Buddhism is the religion protected by the government of Sri Lanka.
The Sri Lankan constitution recognises Buddhism as the State Religion and grants it some special rights. It made it the duty of the government to protect and advance Buddhist Dharma throughout the nation. The Sinhala community constituted the largest share of the population in Sri Lanka. In Sri Lanka, 74% of the population were Sinhala, 18% were Tamils, and Sinhala speakers mainly followed Buddhism, while the Tamils were either Hindus or Muslims and a few Christians. When Sri Lanka gained independence, the Sinhala community thus dominated the government and initiated a policy that favoured majoritarianism.
