The cell theory was proposed by Matthias Schleiden in 1838 and Theodor Schwann in 1839. They stated that all plants and animals are composed of cells and that the cell is the basic unit of life. Later, Rudolf Virchow in 1855 added to the cell theory by suggesting that all cells arise from pre-existing cells.
