China has developed the most in recent times. In the global arena, the proportion of poor people on average dropped from 36% in 1990 to about 10% in 2015. Though poverty has substantially declined in the world in general, there have been international disparities. China, like many other South-East Asian countries, managed to dramatically reduce poverty in their respective countries through rapid economic growth and massive investments in Human Resources Development. As a result, the proportion of poor people in China decreased from 88.3% in 1981 to about 14.7% in 2008 to 0.6% in 2019, a far greater rate than in any other South-East Asian country like India.
