A 200-year-old method of drawing water from springs and streams using bamboo pipes is widely used in Meghalaya. About 18 to 20 litres of water enters the bamboo pipe system, travels hundreds of metres, and then, at the plant location, is reduced to 20 to 80 drops per minute. Perennial springs on the hilltops are gravity-fed to the lower regions via bamboo pipelines. The bamboo channel sections direct water to the plant location, where it is distributed into branches constructed and set out using various bamboo pipe designs. Water flowing into the pipes can be managed by adjusting the pipe placements. The pipes are carried far above the ground if they cross a road. The final stage of water application involves using reduced channel sections and diversion devices. Water can be dispensed close to the plant's roots thanks to the final channel segment.
