Detailed Solution

Karnataka is mostly covered by laterite soil.
Laterite soil is a result of continuous weathering. The high temperature and heavy rainfall in the western and southern regions of India result in most of these regions having laterite soil. The intense rainfall results in leaching, making the soil deficient in minerals. The iron and aluminium compounds remain in the soil, making it suitable for cultivation with proper irrigation and fertilisation. Karnataka and Maharashtra are the states where the soil covers almost the entire state. Other states have a scattered distribution of laterite soil. The Vindhya and Satpura ranges, the Malwa plateau, and the Western and Eastern Ghats have a presence of laterite soil.
