Detailed Solution

Reaction of sodium aluminate with carbon dioxide:

2NaAlO2+CO2+3H2O2Al(OH)3+Na2CO3

Alumina is a bad conductor of electricity and has a high melting point. To overcome this issue, fluorspar (CaF2)and cryolite (Na3AlF6) is added to alumina which increases its conductivity and reduces its melting point.

In the Hall’s process, anode is made up to carbon where oxygen liberated and forms CO and CO2.
