One of the most significant kings of the Ganga dynasty in the 12th century was Anantavarman. He made the decision to build Purushottama Jagannatha a temple at Puri. In 1230, King Anangabhima III declared himself to be the god's representative and consecrated his realm to him. As the temple grew in importance as a center for pilgrimage, so did its influence in social and political issues. Every king that conquered Orissa, including the Mughals, Marathas, and the English East India Company, made an effort to seize control of the temple. The Shree Jagannath Temple is situated in Puri, in the state of Odisha, on the Eastern Coast of India.
