The Khokhar tribe of Punjab was very influential during the 13th and 14th centuries. During the British Raj, they were meant to be an agrarian tribal community. Muhammad Ghori ran various anti-Khokhar campaigns in Punjab before his death. After being influenced by Baba Fariduddin Ganjshakar, many Khokhars who had previously practised Hinduism switched to Islam. The medieval Persian historian Firishta described the Khokhar people of the time as a "barbaric race without religion and morality."
