The flow of blood in the heart and the circulatory system is unidirectional. Arteries and veins are the two primary blood vessels in the circulatory system. 

The arteries carry oxygenated blood at high pressure. This is sufficient for circulation throughout the body.

However, the veins carry blood at a much lower pressure which is not enough to overcome gravity and other forces and transport blood toward the heart. Hence, to prevent the backward flow of blood, veins contain valves.
