Tamils of Sri Lanka wanted a federal government.
The conflict between the Sri Lankan government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam(LTTE) is Asia's longest-running civil war. The members of the LTTE wanted equal rights and equal representation in the government which can only be guaranteed by the federal government. When their rights were suppressed, they began an armed conflict with the government and started demanding a separate state. The government of Sri Lanka favoured the native people of Sri Lanka, called the Sinhala people. The LTTE wanted equal rights like those of the Sinhala people and wanted equality to be established. However, the government of Sri Lanka did not support the demands of the LTTE. Armed conflict between the two went on for three decades.
