Detailed Solution

Fullerenes are made up of carbon atoms, where each carbon is connected to three other carbon atoms through covalent bonds. The carbon atoms are arranged in a pattern of hexagons and pentagons, forming a cage-like, spherical structure—similar to the pattern on a soccer ball.

The most common fullerene is C60, which contains 60 carbon atoms. Fullerenes are made entirely of carbon, with no hydrogen, and each carbon atom is sp² hybridized. Other fullerenes can have as few as 20 carbon atoms or more than 100 carbon atoms.

In a fullerene, just like in graphite, each carbon forms three sigma bonds with neighboring carbons. This makes each carbon sp² hybridized, giving fullerenes their unique spherical shape.
