A sound wave is both a mechanical and longitudinal wave.
Sound is produced by the vibrations of the particles of the object. Hence particles are the main carriers of the sound waves. But the position of the particles does not change while vibrating. So a medium is needed to propagate the sound like mechanical waves. Hence sound waves are mechanical waves. Also, particles vibrate along the direction of the propagation of the sound; hence it is a longitudinal type wave also.
