Bhimbetka (in present-day Madhya Pradesh). This historic location has rock shelters and caverns. People preferred these caves because they offered protection from the wind, rain, and heat. These caves in the rocks are not far from the Narmada valley. In addition, there are numerous heavily sculpted sandstone rock formations across the Bhimbetka region. Since 1971, most of the archaeological investigation at the Bhimbetka site has been focused on its hill, where 243 shelters have been examined, 133 of which feature rock art. Along with the cave paintings, archaeologists have discovered numerous other artifacts, the earliest of which are Acheulean stone tool assemblages, in the caves, dense teak forests, and cultivated fields around Bhimbetka.
