The Estates General or States-General was the governing and advisory body for several classes (or estates) of French matters under the old government in France. The king called and adjourned a separate gathering of the clergy, aristocracy, and peasants in this assembly. It did not require the permission of a royal tax or law, unlike the English Parliament; hence it did not have its genuine authority. Instead, it acted primarily as the King's consulting company, submitting applications from various estates and giving financial advice.
