Detailed Solution

The last Indian state annexed by the British was Awadh.
In 1856, Lord Dalhousie invaded Awadh and incorporated it into the British Empire. Awadh was forced into a subsidiary alliance in 1801, and it was seized in 1856. According to Governor-General Dalhousie, the territory was mismanaged, and British rule was necessary to enforce effective management. The Doctrine of Lapse, which Dalhousie gave the British, allowed them to annexe an Indian kingdom if its ruler passed away without a male successor.
