Detailed Solution

Varanasi and Somnath were the places during the Mughal period where the temples were destroyed. Kings constructed temples to show their devotion to God and their power and wealth. Therefore, when kingdoms were attacked, the invaders sometimes targeted these temples. Mahmud Ghazni attacked temples and looted their wealth and idols. Sultan Mahmud wasn't a significant ruler then, but by damaging temples, especially the Somnath temple, he tried to win the image of a good hero of Islam. Mughal tyrant Aurangzeb had issued 'farmans' ordering the destruction of Hindu temples at Varanasi (Kashi), Mathura, and Kalkaji.
