While doing experiment to trace the path of a ray of light through a rectangular glass prism a student is not getting emergent ray in straight line because the ray of light undergoes deviation while passing a through glass prism.
A ray of light enters the glass prism through one surface and leaves it from another surface. While entering it gets deviated and while leaving also it gets deviated, so the deviation of ray of light is two times. This happens because two surfaces of the prism at which refraction of light taking place are not parallel to each other. Also, while passing through the prism ray of light bends towards its base making an angle of deviation, as shown in figure1. Therefore, while doing experiment student does not get incident ray and emergent ray in straight line.
