While the ports of Surat and Hooghly decayed, Bombay and Calcutta grew during industrialisation in India in the 19th century. New industries came up in Bombay and Calcutta, like cotton mills and jute mills. Workers from nearby areas came to Bombay and Calcutta for employment. Peasants and craftsmen looking for work left the villages and migrated to the industrial hubs. 1911 saw a majority of workers in the Bombay cotton industries come from the nearby Ratnagiri area.
