The act of an elected member of one party joining another after the election is referred to as "defection."This type of political migration is not healthy for democracy as defections are frequently influenced by ministerial positions and cash, resulting in instability within the government.
In 1967-71, instances of defection were on the upward thrust, and to address it, and the 52nd Constitutional Amendment was passed. The 52nd Amendment Act of 1985 provided for the disqualification of members of Parliament and the country's legislatures on the floor of a political party defection. This has got to be called the "Anti-Defection Law." The Chairman or the Speaker shall give the final decision on the ground of defection.
