Robert Clive founded the Dual Government of Bengal in the aftermath of the Treaty of Allahabad (1765). The real power was obtained by the British East India Company, while the obligation and charge of administering were entrusted to the Nawab of Bengal. The British administration assumed both the features of the Diwani and the Nizamat of Bengal's dual system of governance. The British benefited greatly from the dual government system because they had power without obligation.
