Buddhist missionaries from China introduced hand printing technology from Japan. The oldest Japanese book, 'The Buddhist Diamond Sutra', was printed in 868 AD. The Buddhist Diamond Sutra has six pages of sheet text and woodcut illustrations. There were approximately 6,000 words in the book. Books were cheap and easily available, so they became very popular in Japan. Bookstores and libraries were packed with hand-printed materials of various types. These included books on calculations; musical instruments; women; tea ceremonies, flower arrangements; proper etiquette; cooking; and famous places.
