To manage the corporation's affairs while the mayor is away, the position of deputy mayor has been created. Although the Mayor is the leader of the Municipal Corporation, the Municipal Commissioner has executive authority, hence the Mayor's position is mostly ceremonial. The Mayor's office combines a ceremonial duty as the city's First Citizen with a functional role of presiding over Corporation meetings. A Deputy Mayor is chosen by the Mayor in accordance with the Municipal Corporation Act of 1888, as amended. The Mayor and Deputy Mayor each have a two-and-a-half-year term.
