He was also a peace and nonviolence icon whose vision and mission led to the end of "Apartheid" in South Africa and its peaceful transition to democracy. Mandela was a strong-willed man. As he grew up, he learned and thought about a few things: that racism was linked to imperialism; that the Gandhian way of fighting (civil disobedience, strikes, protest marches, boycotts, and all kinds of demonstrations) was important, but that some changes could be made based on what was needed; and that the discriminatory social system had to be overthrown by people from all walks of life and with different ideas.
