Detailed Solution

James Mill and Thomas Macaulay opposed the idea of Orientalism.
James Mill was one of many who criticised Orientalists. He stated that the British endeavour should not be to educate what the Indians desired or appreciated to appease them. He believed Indians should be introduced to Western science and technology rather than Eastern poetry and religious texts. However, the opposition to Orientalists intensified in the 1830s. Thomas Babington Macaulay was one of the most vocal and well-known critics. He believed India needed to become more civilised because it was an uncivilised nation. He also asserted that no branch of Eastern knowledge could match what England had produced.
