Tribals, Merchants, Middle class were involved in the non-cooperation movement. Thousands of students quit government-run institutions and colleges, principals and professors resigned, and attorneys stopped practising law. Except for Madras, most provinces boycotted the council elections. Foreign goods were boycotted, liquor stores were picketed, and foreign clothing was burned in massive bonfires. Merchants and traders in many regions refused to trade in foreign products or fund foreign commerce. As the boycott campaign developed, consumers began to abandon foreign clothing in favour of Indian-made clothing. Plantation employees took part in the movement as well. Tribes wanted to travel autonomously, so they joined the movement.
