Seth Hukumchand set up the first jute mill in Calcutta in 1917. The age of industrialisation has a significant history of Indian struggle to get away from British prominence over Indian products. Just like cotton was prominent in the regions of India, jute was getting popular and renowned too in the country, especially in the areas of West Bengal. The first jute mill was established in 1917 by an industrialist and businessman called Seth Hukumchand. Many other Indian industrialists, including Seth, wanted to reflect their lineage over Indian independence and the Swadeshi movement. Thus they built, established and led industries in the textile, iron, steel and, shipping, banking sectors.
