Dr B.R. Ambedkar shared his experience of caste-based discrimination. When he was only nine years old, he had gone to the railway station and was waiting for his father and his siblings to go to Koregaon. He paused for a long time, but his father was not seen. Seeing this, the station master came to enquire. When he asked them what their caste was, Ambedkar said that they were Mahars. On hearing this, the station master left quickly. He returned sometime later and inquired what they were planning to do. Dr Ambedkar told him they had the money to hire a bullock cart. But by then, word had spread that they were Mahars, so no cart man was willing to pick them up. They were denied this service because they were seen as "untouchables".
