Erasmus was a critic of the print media. Because he was concerned that the spread of books containing rebellious ideas might contribute to this, he opposed the publishing of books. He believed that the majority of literature was worthless, irrational, and simply propagated scandalous, nonreligious views. He thought that the arrival of such publications in great quantities would diminish the value of serious literature. If that happened, the influence of "valuable" books would be destroyed. This dread was the driving force behind the harsh criticism of the newly published works of literature that began to spread, condemnation that was expressed by monarchs, religious leaders, and a large number of authors and artists.
