The tripartite struggle was among the Pratihara Empire, the Pala Empire and the Rashtrakuta Empire in the mediaeval period.
It was a three-way struggle because there were three "sides" to this long-running conflict. Historians often describe it as a "tripartite struggle". There was a tripartite struggle for control of Kanauj in the 9th century. In the end, the Pratiharas won. These powers shared a common border in the regions of Gujarat and Malwa. The border was movable and far from permanent, causing hostility between the forces because it symbolised sovereignty over the Ganges plain.
