Detailed Solution

Victor Emmanuel II was proclaimed the first king of united Italy in 1861. Italy had a long history of being politically fragmented. Italy was divided into seven states, from which only Sardinia-Piedmont was one state which was ruled by an Italian princely house. Giuseppe Mazzini initiated the struggle for the unification of Italy; however, the burden of the failing revolutionary struggle fell on the shoulders of king Victor Emmanuel II of Sardinia-Piedmont. Sardinia-Piedmont, with a successful diplomatic alliance with France, was able to defeat Austrian forces in the north of Italy and in 1860, they marched into the south, driving out Spanish rulers from the south of Italy. After this, in 1861, Victor Emmanuel II was made the king of Italy.
