Detailed Solution

Dietrich Brandis was the first Inspector General of Forests in India.
The British required trees for the construction of railroads and ships. The British were concerned that residents using the woods and traders felling trees carelessly would destroy the woods. So, after consulting him, they decided to appoint Dietrich Brandis, a German expert, as the first Inspector General of Forests in India. Brandis knew that a proper system needed to be put in place to manage the forests and that people needed to be taught the science of conservation. This system would need to be justified. For the use of forest resources, regulations had to be made. Grazing and tree-felling must be controlled if forests producing lumber are to be preserved.
