Detailed Solution

Dietrich Brandis was the first Inspector General of Forests in India. The British were worried that the locals using the forests and traders recklessly felling trees would cause the destruction of the forests. So, they decided to appoint Dietrich Brandis, a German expert, as India's first Inspector General of Forests. Brandis was aware that a proper system needed to be put in place to manage the forests and that people needed to be taught the science of conservation. For the use of forest resources, regulations had to be made. As a result, Brandis helped set up the Indian Forest Act of 1865 and established the Indian Forest Service in 1864.
