Dietrich Brandis was the first Inspector of Forests in India. In 1864, Brandeis became Inspector General of Forests in India, where he served for 20 years. He drafted new forest legislation and helped to establish research and training institutes. Brandis founded the Imperial Forest School in Dehradun. In 1878, Brandeis was named a companion of the Indian Empire, and in 1887 he became Knight Commander of the same order. Brandeis records the sacred groves of the Rajputana and Kans (forests) of Mysore, Garo, and Kasia Hills, visited in 1879; Sacred forests. He was one of the first in India to link forest protection with indigenous peoples formally.
