Detailed Solution

The first king of united Italy was Victor Emmanuel II.
Giuseppe Mazzini attempted to create a coherent program for the united Italian Republic in the 1830s. However, due to the failure of revolutionary upheavals in 1831 and 1848, the task of uniting the Italian republics through war fell to Sardinia-Piedmont and its monarch, King Victor Emmanuel II. In addition to the official forces, an influential group of armed volunteers led by Giuseppe Garibaldi joined the fight. In 1860, they marched into South Italy and the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, where they were successful in rallying local peasants to force out the Spanish authorities. Subsequently, in 1861, Victor Emmanuel II was crowned as the king of a united Italy.
