Mir Jafar was the puppet ruler. He succeeded the former Nawab of Bengal, Siraj ud-doula, as Nawab. On June 24, 1757, in reality, he was a puppet in the hands of the devious British. He promised the British to act on their advice. The company was granted the undisputed right to free trade in Bengal, Bihar, and Orissa. The British had a long way to go before they could complete their takeover of rich Bengal. Mir Jafar initially enjoyed all the support, but as time passed, he started to lose interest in his greed for money and power.
