The Kalangs of Java were well-known skilled forests cutters. They were efficient woodcutters and nomad farmers. They were valuable for harvesting teak that was considered difficult for others. In 1755, the Mataram kingdom of Java was split. There were 6000 Kalang families present in Java. Their importance can be assessed by the fact that the 6000 families were equally divided among the two kingdoms. The Dutch also valued the expertise of Kalangs and made kalangs work under them to control forests in the eighteenth century. The kalangs also rose in rebellion against the dutch in 1770 but were suppressed soon.
