The Ahoms annexed the kingdoms of the Chhutiyas and the Koch-Hajo.
In the thirteenth century, the Ahoms migrated from the present-day Myanmar region to the Brahmaputra valley. By suppressing the older political system of the area called bhuiyans (landlords), Ahoms built a new state. In 1523, they annexed the kingdom of the Chhutiyas. In 1581, they annexed the kingdom of the Koch-Hajo and subjugated many other tribes as well. The Ahoms were able to build such a state because of the usage of firearms even in the 1530s. Later, they also mastered making and using high-quality gunpowder and cannons by the 1660s. By the mid-seventeenth century, the administrative system of Ahoms became centralized.
