Detailed Solution

The chiefs mentioned in Sangam poems are the Cholas, Cheras, and Pandyas. They were collectively known as Muvendar, and their names are mentioned in the Sangam literature. They were the most important ruling families in south India about 2300 years ago. They became rich and powerful by controlling the coast and river valleys in the southern part of the country. Each of the three kings had two main centres to control. One was inland, and the other was on the coast. Many poets composed poems in praise of their rulers. These poems can be found in the Sangam collection.
