Detailed Solution

Queen Victoria became the Empress of India.
When Bahadur Shah Zafar, the Mughal emperor, was overthrown following the Indian Mutiny of 1857, also known as the First War of Independence, the East India Company's power over British India was transferred to the Crown. As a result, Queen Victoria assumed the title of Empress of India de facto, but not officially, until Benjamin Disraeli became prime minister following the general elections of 1874 and passed the "Royal Titles Act 1876," giving her the full title.
