Detailed Solution

The main supporters of Jainism were the traders.
Jainas, the followers of Mahavira, had to lead simple lives, begging for food. Mahavira asked Jainas to be honest, observe celibacy, and not steal. Jaina men gave up everything, even their clothes. Many left their homes to learn and teach Jainism. However, the strict rules became difficult for most men and women of people like farmers, who had to kill insects to protect their crops, found it difficult to follow the rules. Many remained behind and supported monks and nuns by providing them with food. Jainism was supported mainly by traders. Jainism spread in Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and north India. The teachings of Mahavira and his followers were transmitted orally for several centuries and got written down at Valabhi, in Gujarat, about 1500 years ago.
