Robert Owen established the New Harmony cooperative. He was the founder of the cooperative New Harmony and a Welsh textile producer. New Harmony was well-known for providing equality for all its male and female residents. At the time, women were paid less than men. This display of egalitarianism was admirable. A cooperative was created by a group in which the enterprises were collectively owned. These businesses produced things collaboratively, and earnings were distributed evenly. It was akin to Karl Marx's concept of employees' salaries being determined by their effort.
