Mahatma Gandhi claimed that English education enslaved Indians. He was against the British promoting western education and criticising Indian education. As per Gandhi, Britishers attempted to enslave Indians by teaching their language. Through this, they tried to convey that the western vision of learning was superior and the Oriental vision was inferior. Gandhi declared that the Indian education system could help India's citizens recover their sense of dignity and self-respect. He urged the Indian students to leave western educational institutions set up by the British during the national movement. Through this, they could convey to the British that the Indians were not willing to adopt the western culture and be enslaved by it.
