Manimekalai was composed by Sattanar. It has a story about the daughter of Kovalan, who was a merchant and lived in puhar. The story has beautiful compositions about the description of the daughter of Kovalan and Madhavi. Madhavi was a courtesan who fell in love with Kovalan. The interesting aspect of this book is that it was lost for many centuries, and only until its manuscripts were rediscovered about 100 years ago that we were able to appreciate this. Apart from this epic, there was another Tamil epic called silappadikaram, composed before this.
