The Aihole inscription was composed by Ravikirti. He was the court poet of the legendary Chalukya ruler Pulakeshin II, and this inscription contains information about Pulakeshin's ancestors and the Chalukya rulers. It goes back four generations from father to son and mentions that Pulakeshin II received the kingdom from his uncle rather than his father. According to the inscription, Pulakeshin II led multiple expeditions along India's west and east coasts to keep a check on king Harshavardhana's progress. It also mentions the legendary battle between Harshavardhana and Pulikeshi II, which Pulakeshin II won.
