The East Indian Company controlled a large sector of the Indian industries till World War I. The sectors where Indian merchants could operate were significantly limited and often overregulated as British control over trade grew tighter. They were forced to export largely raw materials and food grains because they were unable to trade in manufactured goods with Europe. European managing agencies did in reality dominate a sizable portion of Indian businesses up until the First World War. Andrew Yule, Bird Heilgers & Co., and Jardine Skinner & Co. were three of the largest. These Organisations raised money, formed joint-stock corporations, and oversaw them. The majority of the time, Indian financiers provided the funds, while all investment and business choices were made by European Agencies. Indian businesspeople were not permitted to join the chambers of trade that the European industrialists and merchants had access to.
