Detailed Solution

The Portuguese, English and Spaniards cultivated indigo in Brazil, Jamaica and Venezuela, respectively. The French planted indigo on the Caribbean islands of St. Domingue, Brazil, and Venezuela, while the Portuguese in Brazil, the English in Jamaica, and the Spaniards in Venezuela. The indigo plant grows primarily in the tropics. By the thirteenth century, Indian indigo was being used by cloth dyers in Italy, France, and the United Kingdom. However, only a small amount of Indian indigo made it to Europe, which was extremely expensive. European fabric manufacturers had to rely on another plant called woad to produce violet and blue colours. By the seventeenth century, European fabric makers had persuaded their governments to lift the ban on indigo imports.
