Mahatma Gandhi designed the Swarajya flag in 1921. The centre of this red, green, and white tricolour flag featured a spinning wheel. The red represents the Hindus and Muslims by the green stripe. The white band stood for harmony with the other Indian communities. The spinning wheel represented Gandhi's philosophy of self-help. The crescent moon symbolised Hindus and Muslims, while the eight lotuses represented the eight British Indian regions. Thus carrying the flag and raising it in the air during marches represented the movement for Indian Independence.
