Detailed Solution

Lord Dalhousie devised a policy that came to be known as the Doctrine of Lapse. Lord Dalhousie served as the Governor General of India from 1848 to 1856. Under him, the final wave of annexation occurred in India. Lord Dalhousie devised and implemented the brutal policy, the Doctrine of Lapse. According to this Doctrine, an Indian ruler with no male heir would be compelled to give up on his kingdom. In simple words, if an Indian ruler did not have a biological male heir, his kingdom would “lapse” and would be liable to become a part of the East India Company territory. Many kingdoms were “lapsed” in this way. Some include kingdoms like Satara, Sambalpur, Udaipur, Nagpur, and Jhansi.
