According to Nazi racial beliefs, Germans and other northern Europeans were ‘Aryans’, a superior race. Once in charge, the Nazis put into place racist laws and regulations that denied rights to Jews, Black people, and Roma (Gypsies). The Nazi leadership began with what they called a ‘ethnic housecleaning’ in the conquered Eastern provinces of Poland and the Soviet Union during World War II. The eradication of alleged enemy ‘races’, particularly the genocide of European Jews, was part of this programme.
