Detailed Solution

Frits Went discovered the Avena curvature test for auxins in 1928 using oat coleoptiles to demonstrate the role of auxins in plant growth and phototropism.

The Avena curvature test for auxins was discovered by Frits Went in 1928. In this experiment, Went used the coleoptile of oat seedlings (Avena sativa) to study the effect of auxins, which are plant hormones responsible for growth and bending towards light (phototropism). He extracted auxins from the coleoptile tips and placed them on agar blocks, which were then applied to one side of decapitated coleoptiles. The unequal distribution of auxins caused the coleoptile to bend, demonstrating the role of auxins in plant growth regulation. This experiment provided one of the first pieces of evidence confirming the existence and action of auxins in plants.
